How Can You Tell If Pearls Are Real? What First Tests Miss

You can tell whether pearls are likely genuine by inspecting them under diffuse white light for layered luster, small differences in surface and shape, and drill holes that expose nacre rather than a peeling coating. Those checks can screen out many imitations. Natural and cultured pearls are both genuine; only a gemological laboratory can reliably separate them with X-radiography and other instruments.

The usual first attempt goes wrong when one dramatic clue, often a gritty tooth test, is promoted to a verdict. A useful home examination is quieter. It preserves the jewelry, records what can be measured and leaves the origin question open when the evidence cannot answer it.

What should you check before deciding that pearls are real or fake?

Start with an evidence record, not a rubbing test. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades pearl quality through seven factors: size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre and matching. The 2024 CIBJO Pearl Book uses separate definitions for natural, cultured, composite and imitation pearls. Together, those systems provide a sound order for a non-destructive check.

  1. Place the strand on a clean, soft white cloth. Photograph the front, back, clasp, knots, damaged areas and any tag or report number before handling it further.
  2. Count every pearl. Compare that total with the seller's description, receipt or laboratory report. Note missing knots, substitutions and a graduated size sequence.
  3. Turn the strand beneath diffuse white light. Compare the sharpness of reflected window edges, color overtones and visible surface marks from pearl to pearl.
  4. Use a 10× loupe at several drill holes. Look for a shell-like nacre edge, accumulated coating, chips, flaking, an exposed glass or plastic core and damage from the drill.
  5. Compare shape, diameter and matching across the whole strand. CIBJO requires strand measurements to state the largest and smallest pearl diameters, measured perpendicular to the drill hole.
  6. Stop if a coating lifts, a knot stretches or nacre appears cracked. Preserve the residue and photographs for a jeweler or laboratory.

The clasp stamp belongs in the record, yet it identifies the metal hardware rather than the pearls. An “18K” mark can support a jewelry description; it cannot convert imitation beads into cultured pearls.

Which clues from luster, surface, drill holes, shape and matching actually help?

Useful clues form a pattern. GIA defines Excellent luster as bright, sharp reflections; Very Good reflections are bright and nearly sharp; Poor reflections are dim and diffused. Genuine nacre can also be dull when its quality is low, so a flat-looking pearl can still be cultured. Conversely, a coated bead can be impressively shiny.

Surface variation deserves a slow look. GIA says its surface grade considers the size, number, nature, location, visibility and type of characteristics. Tiny pits, wrinkles, ridges or abrasions can support an organic origin. Perfectly repeated marks look suspicious, while a uniformly smooth strand raises a question rather than settling it. Fine genuine pearls may receive a Clean grade.

Drill holes often expose the construction. Chipped paint, a ridge of pooled coating or a different-colored core supports imitation. A narrow hole is no guarantee: the Fire Mountain Gems product sheet for item L2160CL describes dyed cultured freshwater pearls measuring 8 × 7 to 10 × 8 mm with holes ranging from 0.8 to 1.4 mm. Hole size varies with product and stringing needs.

Roundness and close matching indicate workmanship and selection, not origin. GIA's matching factor compares size, shape, color, luster, surface and nacre quality within a piece. Skilled graders can assemble remarkably uniform cultured strands, and manufacturers can make deliberately irregular imitations. The stronger home finding is inconsistency in construction, such as one peeling bead among pearls with visible nacre at their holes.

Are cultured pearls real, and how do they differ from natural and imitation pearls?

Cultured pearls are real pearls produced by a mollusk after human intervention. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission's definition in 16 CFR § 23.19 says a cultured pearl forms when a human-planted nucleus is coated with nacre by the mollusk. The same rule defines an imitation as a manufactured product made from any material that simulates a natural or cultured pearl.

“Real” therefore covers natural and cultured pearls in ordinary consumer language, provided the cultured origin is disclosed. “Natural” is a narrower laboratory claim. CIBJO also warns that the unqualified word “pearl” cannot be used for an imitation and requires the terms “imitation” or “simulated” at sale.

Which numbers should a pearl description or laboratory report contain?

Numbers prevent a later memory dispute. They also show where a document stops. GIA's January 23, 2024 sample Pearl Identification Report describes 139 drilled natural saltwater pearls from a Pinctada species, graduated from 2.80 to 6.00 mm. That is far more useful than “small antique pearls,” and CIBJO's measurement rule explains how the diameter is taken.

A second GIA sample, report 5476524949 dated February 26, 2025, records 47 cultured akoya pearls measuring 8.01 to 9.05 mm. Under the named GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors scale, it grades luster Excellent, surface Clean, matching Excellent and nacre Acceptable. The report discloses 0 of 47 pearls individually as blemished because it gives one strand-level surface grade and lists no exceptions. That zero describes the document, not a microscopic guarantee. An owner preparing a resale record should count and photograph every pearl with a visible pit, crack, abrasion or peeling area.

Nacre thickness needs equally careful attribution. Pearl Science Laboratory in Japan states that its proprietary Aurora Hanadama designation applies to white akoya pearls of at least 6 mm with nacre measuring at least 0.4 mm. CIBJO defines thickness as the average nacre over a bead-cultured pearl, expressed in millimeters, and cautions that thickness does not automatically equal nacre quality. GIA offers an average-thickness calculation as an add-on service for bead-cultured pearls.

Hiroshi Komatsu, the Pearl Science Laboratory founder who held a doctorate in art engineering, drew the distinction in a 2018 column (translated from Japanese): “Maki is the quantity of the nacre layer; luster is the quality of the nacre layer.” The 0.4 mm Aurora Hanadama minimum cannot be applied to every pearl type or every grading scheme.

X-radiographs supply the internal record that a ruler cannot. In a 2017 Gems & Gemology study, Stefanos Karampelas and colleagues found an onion-like structure with a dark central spot in a natural Pinctada radiata pearl. A bead-cultured Pinctada fucata sample showed a structureless bead about 4.5 mm in diameter, bounded by a dark organic growth line and nacre overgrowth. A non-bead freshwater cultured sample showed ring-like growth and a likely twisted cavity. Those overlapping structures explain why an image needs expert interpretation.

Why do tooth, friction, water, heat and chemical tests fail?

The tooth test detects texture, not origin, quality or value. Natural and cultured nacre can both feel finely gritty; the FTC definitions explain why. Some imitations feel smooth, while coated or shell-based products can confuse the result. GIA gives pearl a Mohs hardness of 2.5, so dragging it over a tooth or rubbing two pearls together risks abrasion before it yields a defensible answer.

Water answers a density question. The FTC allows an imitation to be made from any material, which means hollow plastic, solid glass and coated shell need not behave alike. Many genuine pearls sink, and many imitations sink with them. Soaking also wets silk or thread and can carry grime into drill holes.

Heat and chemicals are damage demonstrations. GIA says high heat can discolor, split or crack cultured pearls; acids and chemicals including perfume, hair spray, cosmetics and perspiration can harm them. CIBJO directs owners to keep pearls away from solvents, acids, high temperatures and ultrasonic cleaning. Vinegar, acetone, bleach, flame and hot-needle tests destroy evidence and may destroy the jewel.

Are rubbing marks, cleaning damage or peeling repairable?

Stop testing as soon as a mark appears. GIA's care guide permits occasional cleaning with warm, soapy water and a very soft cloth, followed by complete drying of the string. It rules out steam and ultrasonic cleaners. Abrasive powders, toothbrushes and jewelry dips fall outside that advice.

A removable film of cosmetics or skin oil may come away during professional cleaning. A scratch through nacre, a crack or a lifted layer cannot be cleaned back into existence. CIBJO treats coating, filling, waxing, oiling and heavy working as processes that require disclosure; hiding damage with a new coating changes the sales description.

Peeling near several holes strongly supports a coated imitation, especially where glass or plastic appears beneath. Genuine bead-cultured pearls can also show thin, cracked or separating nacre after impact, dehydration or harsh processing. GIA says a visible nucleus beneath nacre or a dull, chalky appearance indicates thin nacre. A qualified pearl jeweler can restring the piece, turn a damaged area toward a knot or replace a pearl. The lost surface itself remains lost.

When is a gemological report necessary?

A report becomes necessary when money depends on a claim that home observation cannot prove: natural origin, saltwater or freshwater environment, mollusk type, treatment status, bead or non-bead culture, or a high quality classification. It is particularly sensible before an owner advertises an inherited strand as natural, before a buyer pays a natural-pearl premium, or when an insurer requires an identified item.

GIA says its Pearl Identification Report records quantity, weight, size, shape, color, identity, environment, detectable treatments and mollusk when determinable. Its Identification & Classification Report adds luster, surface and matching for eligible nacreous saltwater cultured pearls. Verify the report number, digital image, pearl count and measurement range against the jewelry in hand.

A laboratory report is not a price opinion. GIA's sample forms state that the report is neither a guarantee nor a valuation. Insurance therefore requires a separate appraisal from a qualified independent appraiser, based on the laboratory identity, condition, construction, provenance and current replacement market.

What should you ask a pearl seller before paying?

Ask the seller to put the claim in writing: natural, bead-cultured, non-bead cultured, composite or imitation. The FTC and CIBJO definitions make those categories materially different. “Genuine,” “estate” and “vintage” leave the formation method unanswered. A metal hallmark and a velvet box do the same.

Request the pearl count, smallest and largest diameters in millimeters, treatments, visible condition, clasp metal, strand length and the laboratory's name if a grade is advertised. GIA uses five named luster grades from Excellent to Poor and four surface categories from Clean to Heavily Spotted. A bare “AAA” has no meaning under the GIA scale unless the seller identifies another system and supplies its criteria.

For a report-backed piece, match the quantity and measurement range to the document and inspect its digital image. Ask whether pearls were replaced or the strand was rearranged after testing; GIA notes that stringing and drilling can limit analysis. For a costly unreported strand, make the sale conditional on independent laboratory identification and agree in writing who pays if the seller's description proves wrong. A return window is useful only when it remains open long enough for that examination.

How should pearls be worn, restrung and stored?

Mikimoto advises putting pearls on after makeup, hair spray and perfume, then wiping away perspiration with a soft cloth. Its care guidance says to fasten clasps and lay each piece separately in a compartmented jewelry box or protective pouch. CIBJO adds an easily missed instruction: do not wrap pearls in moisture-absorbing cotton wool.

GIA permits warm, soapy water for occasional thorough cleaning, provided a strung piece dries completely before wear. Mikimoto recommends regular restringing because stretched or loose thread can fail suddenly. Have the strand checked when knots become fuzzy, dark, loose or widely spaced, and before frequent wear resumes. Individual knots limit pearl-to-pearl rubbing and can keep most of a strand from scattering if the thread breaks.

Do real pearls float or sink?

Most genuine pearls sink in water, yet sinking cannot prove authenticity.
